Updated on January 20, 2019Fractions are one of the most difficult concepts for students to understand. These worksheets can be used as summative or as diagnostic tests to determine the level of understanding students have. Or, teachers can assign them as homework or for-in-class work.
The free printables offer a variety of concepts related to fractions involving all operations, multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting, as well as understanding common denominators. A worksheet or test is provided in each section for students to complete followed by an exact replica of the PDF containing the answers for ease of grading.
This test or worksheet provides fraction problems involving mixed operations, requiring adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. If you are using this printable as a test, you'll find out whether students understand when they need to find a common denominator before working the fraction problems.
If students are struggling, explain that when the denominators—or the bottom numbers—are the same in two fractions, they only need to subtract or add the numerators or top numbers. When the fraction problems involve the operations of multiplying and dividing, students don't need to find the common denominators; in those cases, students can just work the problems.
For this worksheet or test, students will have to answer problems involving mixed fractions. Students will have to simplify the fractions or convert mixed fractions to improper fractions in order to compare them.
This worksheet offers more opportunities for students to simplify, reduce, and compare fractions. However, for this PDF, students will need to fill in the correct numerator for some fractions.
Students will get more practice on mixed operations on this worksheet or test, but they will also need to fill in the denominator—the bottom number on a fraction—in order to compare two fractions.
Before students begin working the fraction problems on this worksheet, explain to them that "of" in math means times (x). So, for one of the problems on the PDF, students will determine what is the product of 1/3 of 8. They can work the problem as follows:
1/3 x 8 = 8/3
As needed, this and the following worksheets give student more practice on simplifying, reducing, and comparing fractions.
